FAQ
How long will Casimir Effect be?
The original aim was to bring the film in at less than 49 minutes, so it will fit within the time limit of the short film categories at the major international film festivals. However we ended up with such a huge amount of fabulous footage the aim is to produce a 60 minute cut of the film, so it is now firmly a short feature. Other cuts may be released for various festivals.
When are you filming?
We have already filmed Casimir Effect it was shot in the last two weeks in March 2010. Editing and special effects are now under way.
When will Casimir Effect be released?
We have to save our premiere for Cannes 2011, then subject to festival requirements we may not be able to do a limited cinematic release for up to 12 months after and a DVD / Blu-Ray release will come 3-4 months after that. If you know of any art-house or independent cinemas that would be interested in this film let us know and we can see what we can do.
Can I help out in any way?
Yes there are many ways you can help out, mainly by spreading the word; we are relying on viral marketing to get the news out. We will provide icons, banners, flyers, stickers and a number of other viral marketing materials.
What is the Casimir Effect?
Dutch physicists Hendrik B. G. Casimir and Dirk Polder first theorised the existence of the Casimir Effect 1948. On a quantum scale the Casimir Effect is so strong that it becomes the dominant force between uncharged conductors. It is theorised that the Casimir Effect holds the quantum particles of an atom together; it is literally the binding force of the universe.
Why did you choose the Casimir Effect?
One of the fundamental theories of time requires vast amounts of energy and exotic matter. Using the Casimir Effect unlimited free energy can be generated, and currently science is looking into the application of the effect in power generation, anti gravity and other strange an interesting things. So with the energy situation sorted, you need to generate exotic matter (exotic matter is matter that defies the current law of physics, such as negative mass), The Casimir Effect can also be manipulated to create such matter, this is then used to open a stable wormhole through space-time and widen it. The main problem is the gravitational forces caused when crossing the event horizon. However a few theories suggest that the Casimir Effect can also be used here to create opposing gravitational forces and counteract the effect of the wormholes gravitational tide.
Casimir Effect is a quantum force even stronger than gravity it represents a level of attraction/repulsion that can be used in a story telling point. With quantum particle A being attracted to quantum particle B and becoming bound in a dance with other quantum particles to create what we know as Atoms, never touching but never being apart. This fits well into a story telling narrative of unrequited love.
This is a very fluffy description of the Casimir Effect, as it is a very complex area of quantum physics that we have only scratched the surface of. We hope that through this film that some of those who find this interesting will take this further and look deeper into quantum physics.
When is Casimir Effect being released?
The films official release date June 2011, this is after the Cannes première.
When can I see Casimir Effect?
After the film has had it regional première at a film festival, we can release the film for distribution in that country or territory. Nearer the time we will be looking for places to screen the film worldwide. Also a limited DVD/Blu-Ray release will be done for Cannes to ship just after.
What are your Future Plans?
We (Gabriel Strange & Lydia Wood) are continuing to write various other film and television projects. A short film called Legacy is at final draft script stage and will be shot early next year and directed by David Newton. Other projects will be announced as they come along.
